Why Breakthrough to Bold?

Why understanding ourselves matters in leadership and in life

I didn’t always know I would become a therapist or coach. I grew up in a family of educators. My father was a high school principal, my mother a teacher so it felt natural to major in education. But as I began student teaching in college, I found myself drawn less to lesson plans and more to the human stories behind them. I wanted to understand what helped some students feel confident and resilient while others struggled.

During that time, I picked up a book that changed everything: Homecoming: Reclaiming and Healing Your Inner Child by John Bradshaw. I can still remember sitting in the teachers’ lounge, highlighter in hand, completely absorbed. One line stopped me cold: “The therapist can only take you as far as their own work has taken them.”

That sentence became my North Star. It made me realize that if I wanted to truly help others grow, I needed to understand myself -my triggers, my patterns, and the parts of me that could hold me back from being fully present.

That realization led me to pursue my master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania and begin a decades-long career helping people grow and lead.

However, awareness didn’t always translate into embodiment. It took experiencing life  from failed relationships, professional challenges, and even years of therapy to recognize that insight alone doesn’t always create change. Over time, I learned that insight can explain our patterns without necessarily changing them. Even with years of self-work, there were moments when I knew better  and still couldn’t respond differently when it counted.

The gap between knowing and embodying became clear in one unforgettable moment. I was in a high-stakes meeting with another executive, let’s call her Jordan, negotiating a transition between our teams. When she made a comment that felt minimizing, something inside me flared. I became reactive and abruptly ended the call. I knew I had let my emotions get the best of me, but I also knew I was a valued performer and that I could get away with such behavior.

However, what lingered was the shame, regret, and disappointment in myself. I wanted to be the composed, emotionally intelligent leader others saw me as  yet I had just acted from a place that didn’t feel aligned with my best self.

Now, with the perspective I have today, I see that moment as a doorway, a signal that something deeper was being stirred in me.

It wasn’t until I discovered Internal Family Systems (IFS) and later began integrating it into my coaching work  that everything clicked. IFS offered a compassionate, non-shaming lens for understanding our inner lives. It helped me see that the parts of us that react, doubt, or defend aren’t flaws to eliminate they’re protective parts doing their best to keep us safe. When we meet those parts with curiosity and compassion, we reconnect with what IFS calls Self -our calm, confident, courageous core.

That realization transformed how I led, how I parented, and how I coached. It inspired me to create Breakthrough to Bold™  a leadership approach that helps people transform reactivity into awareness, fear into grounded confidence, and self-criticism into clarity.

This work isn’t about perfection or mastering leadership skills. It’s about learning to lead from the inside out  to see every trigger, every uncomfortable moment, as an invitation to grow. To me, being bold isn’t about being loud or forceful. It’s about being anchored in yourself -steady, open, and willing to stay present even when it’s uncomfortable.

If I could change one thing about leadership culture, it would be this: that we stop shaming ourselves for being human, and start seeing our discomfort as data -clues that guide us toward deeper awareness, connection, and true leadership.

Because Breakthrough to Bold™ is where all true leadership begins -within.
